Strong economy – state-of-the-art technology
The Ortenau region is the most significant economic region in the Upper Rhine catchment area. Metal industry and mechanical engineering dominate the industrial structure.
Amongst them are a number of medium-sized companies that are world market leaders. Significant is also the regions paper, publishing and print industry. Large-scale industry can mainly be found at the fringes of the region, in particular in Freiburg and the larger Karlsruhe region.
In Rastatt near Karlsruhe, Mercedes-Benz assembles its A-class model. In the entire region, particularly in the ‘solar city’ Freiburg, companies are known for their development of cutting-edge energy technologies. The GDP produced in this region counts amongst the highest in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
The economic region Offenburg-Ortenau boasts its own institution for the promotion of economic development. It is also known for its excellent public relations and marketing. This institution, on behalf of its associates (Ortenau region, communes, chamber of industry and commerce Southern Upper Rhine and Chamber of Crafts Freiburg) projects and realizes measures to increase the region’s name recognition and marketing status. In addition, it also produces a survey of all resident companies and promotes further industrial settlements.
