Excellent universities – well-trained professionals
Numerous universities, institutes and colleges in the region are active partners in economy and development. They epitomize a unique combination of cutting-edge technological research and high-quality integrated vocational training.
The University of Freiburg as well as the Universities of Applied Sciences in Offenburg, Karlsruhe and Pforzheim are well-reknowned for their excellent training programs. They produce highly-trained experts in the areas of economy, technology and media.
These educational institutions pursue an extraordinary interchange between theory and practice orientation. Thereby, students experience a close interlocking between apprenticeship and involvement in enterprises that co-operate with academic and training institutions. This system can be said to be unique in Europe.
Particularly one institution, the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) deserves special mention. It is a merger between the city’s university (one of the top ten elite universities in Germany) and its research and development faculty that successfully combines research, training and innovation. As a large research facility of world fame, it employs roughly 8,000 people and has a year budget of around € 700 mio with potential for continued growth. It is actively interlinked with other research facilities and large companies in the province of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, Europe and the rest of the world.
